A decision on the management of the Hay Park South Multi Sports Pavilion has been deferred until next year after a passionate presentation from a Bunbury sporting club.

Bunbury City Council was set to retain management of the multi-million-dollar sporting facility, but instead voted to put off any decision.

It followed a presentation from South West Phoenix Soccer Club president Guy Italiano who said the agenda item overlooked facts which were pertinent to the ongoing negotiations with the club.

“I won’t stand by and let the City of Bunbury tarnish our club’s reputation in the manner which you’ve sought to do so with the presentation of this agenda item,” Mr Italiano said.

“This agenda item throws us under a bus and makes us look like villains.”

City officers had recommended the council retain management of the facility following failed attempts to get a club to take over.

But Mr Italiano said the club still wanted to work with the council for the facility to reach its full potential.

The matter was deferred until March.
