Perth delivery driver Ganganbir Singh ordered to pay thousands for Bussell Highway pile-up
The Perth delivery driver responsible for a four car pile-up on Bussell Highway last year has been order to pay $10 000 in fines for the “vicious” accident.
Ganganbir Singh, 25, appeared in Bunbury Magistrates Court on Monday where he was sentenced on four counts of careless driving causing bodily harm in relation to the 2022 smash.
On April 14, 2022, Singh was travelling north on Bussell Highway in his Hino truck when it rear-ended a stationary Nissan Patrol, waiting to turn right on to Ruabon Road in Ludlow.
The Nissan was pushed into the southbound lane where it collided with a Kia Sorrento travelling southbound.
The Hino, now on its side, also continued into the southbound lanes where it collided with a Holden Trailblazer.
The court was told all four vehicles suffered “extensive” damage in which Singh had to fork out more than $6000 in excess, with the man also airlifted to Royal Perth Hospital in a critical condition.
It was further heard the four victims suffered a variety of injuries including fractured ankles, torn ligaments, muscular and skeletal injuries, loss of hearing and general upper body pain.
Police prosecution told the court the man was “very remorseful” for his actions, quitting his job soon after the crash admittedly “too nervous” to get behind the wheel again.
It was further submitted the victims wished no harsh penalty for the man, police saying they were all “concerned for his welfare” knowing the crash was unintentional.
Singh’s lawyer told the court it was the man’s first time driving the notorious highway, and that he was “not familiar” with the route and this particular section of road that widens, allowing cars to pass when other vehicles are waiting to turn.
Despite telling the court the man was not in the position to pay fines, Magistrate Benjamin Tyers order Singh to pay $2500 to each victim, totalling in $10,000 with additional court costs, seeing it as the only fair justice given the circumstances.
