Police call for information on baseball bat assault

Bunbury detectives are calling on people with any information regarding an alleged baseball bat assault in Australind on Sunday which left a man with serious head injuries.

The victim, who was sleeping at the time, was airlifted to Royal Perth Hospital after the alleged attack, where he remains in a critical condition.

Police believe there were several members of the public who may have seen the accused walking in the area of Denebola Crescent, Millbridge Boulevard and Eaton Drive between 7.15-8.30pm.

He was wearing a red Chicago Bulls singlet and carrying a baseball bat.

Harvey William George Nannup faced several charges in Bunbury Magistrates Court on Monday.

He was remanded in custody until tomorrow on charges of aggravated home burglary and commit, one count of stealing and one count of with intent to do grievous bodily harm does bodily harm to another.

Police allege about 7.20pm on Sunday, the 38-year-old from Glen Iris drove to a home in Denebola Drive and armed with an aluminium baseball bat, entered the premises.

Mr Nannup allegedly threatened a female occupant who locked herself in a bathroom while he continued to go through the house.

It is further alleged that Mr Nannup approached the male victim who was sleeping and struck him with the baseball bat multiple times to the head and face causing severe swelling to the brain of the victim and a fractured skull.

The female occupant was able to call emergency services and the victim, a man in his 30s, was conveyed to Bunbury Hospital before being airlifted to Royal Perth Hospital with serious head injuries.

It is also alleged that as Mr Nannup left the home on foot, he stole a woman’s purse.

Police apprehended the accused about 30 minutes later walking along Eaton Drive.
