A new police station is expected to be completed in Capel by the middle of next year.

Police Minister Michelle Roberts and Collie-Preston MLA Mick Murray announced the corner of Spurr Street and Prowse Road as the preferred location of the station on Thursday.

“This is a significant milestone which delivers on our commitment to build a new police station in Capel,” Ms Roberts said.

“We expect that we will be able to deliver a police station here by mid next year.

“This means a strong police presence in Capel for the first time, that is something the community asked for.”

The State Government committed to building the Capel station prior to the 2017 election.

Ms Roberts said the $8 million allocated to the project was on budget and ahead of schedule but could not confirm when work would start as further community consultation was required.

“We’ve built police stations across the State on a routine basis so we have a team of people that know what is required,” she said.

“I’d expect the process to go smoothly to deliver on the proposed timetable.”

Mr Murray said the station would provide a missing link for the South West in a growth area.

“For many years, the people of Capel have been without a police presence so I am pleased that this project will make our regional communities safer,” he said.

A community consultation meeting will be held at the Capel Community Centre from 5.30pm on Thursday.
