Prisoners help out at swamp

Bunbury prisoners have played a part in a major revitalisation of the city’s Big Swamp wetlands.

The project has included removing weeds and dead vegetation and cleaning up the perimeter of the wetland and is a collaboration between Bunbury City Council, Friends of Big Swamp and Bunbury Regional Prison.

Prisoners have been working in crews for up to eight hours a day.

Friends of Big Swamp group member Kathryn Harbutt said the men were enthusiastic and happy to be working at the wetland.

“We really can’t thank them enough for all the hard work they are putting in,” Ms Harbutt said.

“They bring their own equipment and have had a major impact on the revitalisation of the area.

“We have received nothing but positive feedback from local residents who are pleased this important work is being carried out.”

The removal of weeds from the wetlands will enable revegetation of the area to begin with local native plants being planted across areas of the site.
