Record numbers take part in South West Academy of Sport Telstra fun run
Record numbers started their weekend by taking part in the 2019 South West Academy of Sport Telstra fun run on Saturday morning.
Academy chief executive Bernice Butlion said conditions were perfect with more than 300 competitors racing around the Leschenault Inlet.
“It is so great that the community has come out to support the event,” she said.
“I knew the times were going to be quick today because we have had ideal weather conditions.”
Luke Paoliello won the 10km run in a time of 35.47.80 as part of the Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School team.
“I haven’t really run a 10km race before, so I’m pretty surprised to be honest,” he said.
“I run a bit, but I kind of just got called out of bed this morning to go for the run.”’
Carolyn Mader, of Boyup Brook, crossed the line in just over 44 minutes to win the women’s 10km race by more than four minutes.
“I smashed the time I thought I’d run – I thought I’d be much closer to 46 minutes,” she said.
“I’ve ran the course before, but this is the first time I’ve taken part in the fun run – I thought it was absolutely brilliant.”
Butlion said the record numbers participating were driven by an increased involvement by schools.
“The schools have really gotten behind us and everybody also brought their families along,” she said.
