South West residents are urged to prepare for a smoky evening from prescribed burns in the area.

The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions has issued a smoke alert for coastal communities between Bunbury and Mandurah in the Peel and South West regions.

Prescribed burns were undertaken today in North Boyanup and Upper Capel, as well as near Dardanup, Collie, Harvey and Donnybrook.

Lingering smoke is expected to clear by midday Friday.

Bunbury was covered with a thick blanket of smoke on Wednesday night from prescribed burns, which made for a spectacular sunset over the coast.
