Risdon picked for Socceroos

Bunbury’s Josh Risdon is one of only four A-League players selected in the 25-man Socceroos squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Intercontinental Play-off against Honduras, starting next week.

Risdon joins Tim Cahill (Melbourne City), James Troisi and Mark Milligan (Melbourne Victory) in the elimination two-game series. The 25-year-old is set to add to his four caps for Australia when the Socceroos travel to San Pedro Sula, Honduras for the first leg of the campaign, before returning to Sydney on Wednesday, November 15.

Risdon made the move from the Perth Glory to the Western Sydney Wanderers earlier this year in an attempt to cement a spot in the national team, a plan which has clearly worked as he has been a regular in coach Ange Postecoglou’s plans for the past few months.

“It has been pleasing to see so many of our players performing strongly for their clubs domestically and abroad, and I believe that puts us in good stead for our upcoming play-off matches,” Postecoglou said.

“With two games in five days and extensive travel between the fixtures, every member of our squad will play an important role.”

Risdon has played three games for the Wanderers so far this A-League season, including the Sydney Derby against arch-rival Sydney FC.

The Socceroos will begin to assemble in San Pedro Sula from Sunday.
