School is in session for Bunbury’s Stark Raven Theatre Company as they return to class with the play One At A Time.

Director Norm Flynn will recreate a single teacher country school at the Girl Guides’ hall in South Bunbury and has told audiences to prepare for an immersive experience.

“It will be like a movie set,” he said. “What inspired this whole thing is that building looking a bit like a one-teacher school.”

Mr Flynn said the story would feature a cast of nine who play a succession of teachers who passed through classrooms from 1907 to modern times, when the school bus spelt the end of the small schools.

“It is like doing 10 little plays, but they all have this common bit of territory where the teacher prowls up and down the front of the class or even up the aisles between the seats looking over the kids shoulders,” he said.

“The audience are the students and that is going to be interesting if they start buying into the play.

“Monologues are an art in themselves and overall it is good experience for every one of the actors.”

Promising humour, drama and live music, One At A Time will open on August 25 with the closing performance on September 2.

Tickets are available from Central News on Victoria Street.
