December 7 was a special evening for Shannon Dalton, with the 16-year-old sailing talent recognised at the 2018 South West Academy of Sport annual awards dinner in Bunbury.

Along with being recognised as the 2018 Sport Star of the Year award, Shannon also received the Individual Female of the Year award.

However, despite these recognitions the humble athlete was quick to acknowledge the support from family, club and SWAS in the South West.

“It’s really nice to share it all with my family and friends,” Shannon said.

“It’s such a great sport.”

In her seventh year, Shannon has competed in several big events locally, interstate and overseas — however, one major goal has already been ticked off her list last year.

“I always wanted to go to the youth world championships,” Shannon said.

“In order to qualify for it, you need to win at the nationals and one person from each country attends it to compete.

“That was in China so it was great to achieve that goal.”

Shannon is in Melbourne this week competing at the Sail Melbourne Regatta and will head to Tasmania next month in a bid to replicate past successes at the national titles.
