Sausage princes: Buckingham the Butchers snags second place in Aussie meat competition

The humble snags from a Bunbury butcher have sizzled on the national stage, being recognised as among the best in the country. Buckingham the Butchers’ lamb sausages snagged second place in the Australian Meat Industry Council’s National Sausage King competition. Part-owner Sean Baker flew over to the Sunshine Coast to participate and said the outcome was a great result. “We’re very proud of the team that we have here,” he said. “Everyone puts in the hard yards and it’s good to get rewarded for it.” The sausage prince result was the culmination of a months-long process which saw the butchers take home wins at a regional and State level. With the top prize being won by a Tasmanian business, Buckingham can lay claim to having the best lamb sausages in mainland Australia. Mr Baker said the secrets to the highly acclaimed product was simple: “fresh, local produce”. The sausages are a popular choice, with staff producing about 80kg of the gourmet offering every week. “Everyone wants to come try it, which is good,” he said. Having come so close to the top prize, the butchers are eyeing off the gold — the sausage king title — when the contest begins again later this year.
