Shire of Collie recommends Regional Joint Development Assessment Panel approve green steel recycling mill

The Shire of Collie has given its support to a proposal for a green steel recycling mill. At a special council meeting last week councillors voted unanimously to recommend the Regional Joint Development Assessment Panel approve the development in Palmer. Green Steel WA have proposed building a mill within the Coolangatta Industrial Estate, which will be able to recycle about 450,000 tonnes of scrap metal to be turned into reinforcement bars. It will use a state-of-the-art electric arc furnace, with the company claiming it will be the most clean and efficient mill in the country. Containers of scrap metal will be transported to the site by rail, before the rods are loaded onto trains and transported to customers. About 600 people are proposed to be employed during construction, with about 200 to be employed in the operation phase. If approved, the company is hopeful to have construction start later this year and operations begin in 2026.
