Easter long weekend: South West heaving on Good Friday as traffic hits amid warning to stay safe on WA roads

The South West is bustling today as travellers flee the city and hit the region to mark the four-day Easter long weekend.

Many made their way south yesterday afternoon, but caravans, boats, and trailers continued to go bumper to bumper down Forrest Highway and through Bunbury and other South West towns.

Caravan parks and other accommodation facilities have been fully booked for weeks, while popular free camping spots are overflowing and available Airbnb houses are almost impossible to find.

Earlier this week, South West District Supt. Geoff Stewart warned police would be on high alert when it comes to road safety and urged drivers to take caution.

“We want to make sure we get everyone down to where they’re going to enjoy the place and that includes everyone that lives here as well,” he said.

“Watch your speed, make sure you stop every now and again and get out of the car, make sure you aren’t in danger of falling to fatigue, if you’re not familiar with the roads you’re on, pay attention.

“We’ve had far too many fatalities this year already and the last thing we want to do is go to another one,” he said.

“The last thing anyone wants to do is go and tell someone their loved one isn’t coming back.

“We just want everyone to enjoy the South West for what it is and go back with good memories and not planning a funeral or sitting beside someone in hospital.”
