South West Slammers to close out brutal schedule stretch with games against Cockburn and Perry Lakes
South West Slammers will close out a brutal schedule stretch when they take on Cockburn Cougars and Perry Lakes Hawks in their second-consecutive double-header this weekend.
The club undertook the longest road trip in the NBL1 West competition when they headed to Kalgoorlie to play Goldfields Giants two weekends ago before taking on Lakeside Lightning and hosting Joondalup Wolves last weekend.
The men’s side’s sole win for the season came over the Cougars in an 89-77 slugfest in round two but they have endured a five-game losing skid since.
Coach Shane Goff is expected to continue to lean heavily on imports Buay Tuach, the league’s third-leading scorer at 26.9 points per game who has been on the court for nearly every available second this season, and Alex Holcombe, who is pacing the league in blocked shots with 17 rejections through his seven games.
Another tough weekend looks to be in the offing for the winless women’s team, with the Cougars and Hawks sitting 4th and 5th on the competition’s ladder.
The battling outfit lost to the Cougars in the reverse fixture by 56 points and the defending champions have since strengthened with the introduction of Israeli import Daniel Raber, who posted 20 points and 12 rebounds on debut last weekend.
After heading to Wally Hagan Stadium to play the Cougars on Friday night, the club will take on the Hawks at Eaton Recreation Centre on Saturday, with the women’s game tipping off at 5pm before the men’s contest gets under way at 7pm.
