Students showcased their Commercial Cooking and Hospitality prowess on Friday as part of the WorldSkills Regional Competition at the South Regional TAFE Bunbury Campus.

Vocational Education and Training In Schools students from across the South West participated in the competition, with the hospitality participants judged on appearance, service and drinks preparation in a mock restaurant on campus.

Simultaneously, Commercial Cookery competitors created a three-course meal in a strict timeframe for a blind tasting, in order to test their cooking finesse and ability to manage time pressure.

The competition was judged by industry experts using a marking scale consistent with other Worldskills competitions taking place nationwide.

The West Australian winners will join other State winners at the national competition next year.

“It is not just testing their cooking skills, but also their ability to manage pressure, cope with changing situations, planning ahead and handling a work flow they are expected to know about when working in a commercial kitchen,” State Manager for West Australia Worldskills Fiona Johnson said.

“We have a number of judges here who are industry experts who judge the competitors against a marking scale which is the same scale used across Australian in all the other VETis competitions”
