SWAS 2023: Lowen Ferry departs SWAS, but will remain a passionate advocate

Throughout his time at SWAS, athlete mentor Lowen Ferry prided himself on not only being relatable, but going above and beyond in his bid to help all athletes. Although Ferry has begun a new career in the sport and recreation industry, he tells Justin Fris that his heart will always be with the academy. Q – Firstly Lowen, congratulations on your new full-time role in the sport and recreation industry. What will it entail and what intrigued you to apply? “My new role will be with WA Cricket as the participation and clubs officer for the South West and Peel regions. I was intrigued to apply as I felt it was a position that I could do well, aligning with my passion for the sport and recreation field.” Q – This new position means you will have to depart SWAS in your capacity as SWAS’ athlete mentor. I imagine this decision wouldn’t have been easy? “It certainly was a tough decision to depart in the current capacity. I am incredibly passionate about the SWAS program, and it’s extremely fulfilling to be able to support such exceptional athletes in the role of athlete mentor. “I will continue to support in the best way possible and look forward to watching SWAS continue to grow.” Q – What have been some of your highlights working at SWAS? “Highlights for me include being able to see firsthand the hard work of the athletes. “Our SWAS athletes train unbelievably hard and not everyone understands the work they put in behind the scenes. Being able to be on the ground and support their athletic endeavours to the highest levels is inspiring.” Q – How would you describe your working relationship and friendship with SWAS chief executive Bernice Butlion? “Bernice is one of the most incredible people I know. “Her layered levels of knowledge and experience provide me with new ways to learn and better myself. Bernice trusted me and was the first person to give me a shot in this field of work, and I will be forever grateful. “I couldn’t ask for a better mentor, and that’s not to mention her caring and happy nature which she displays through her friendship.” Q – Which skills are you hoping to carry over in your new role? “I look forward to transferring my communication skills, helping build positive relationships and therefore creating positive environments for individuals and sport, to grow within the community.”
