A section of Bussell Highway was left in disarray with ongoing traffic hold-ups on Wednesday after a woman was trapped in her vehicle during a multi-vehicle crash.

Around 11.15am last Wednesday, five cars collided in a nose-to-tail incident on Bussell Highway in Carey Park, outside the Bunbury Hospital.

Police say a Ford Mustang, Mazda BT-50, Toyota Landcruiser, Mitsubishi Magna and a Toyota Landcruiser were in the right lane of the Highway waiting to turn right onto Robertson Drive when the crash happened.

The Mitsubishi became wedged between two cars, leaving the 60-year-old female driver trapped with critical injuries.

The Mitsubishi was written off and nobody else was injured in the incident.

The double carriageway heading north towards Bunbury was blocked off from Washington Avenue to the roundabout at Robinson Drive for most of the day, with motorists being directed to a detour.

Congestion was backed up into Dalyellup as motorists headed into Bunbury in the afternoon.

Drivers and passengers, including some young children, involved in the incident remained on scene until the early afternoon assisting police in the investigation.

The major crash squad is continuing investigations.
