Women’s basketball wrap: Sky miles above the Conquerors

Tornadoes Black continue their wining streak with a 72-61 win over Aces Navy on Tuesday night. The first quarter saw both sides on a roll, with threes flying from Black’s Kelly Bastow and Navy’s Alexis Donovan to see a nine-point margin at the first break. The second quarter opened up with a string of fouls from both sides before Navy’s Isabella Andrew got into gear and lead her side to a comeback, the margin only one point at the major break. Black’s Tiahna Sears again came alive in the third. But Navy met the challenge and the Black’s only led by five at three-quarter-time. However the pace set by Blacks was amplified in the final quarter, pulling ahead to win by 11. Isabella Andrew had a sensational game for Navy, while Bree Chalk and Sears were massive for Blacks. Black sit five wins clear on top of the ladder and face Tornadoes Red next Tuesday while Navy sit narrowly at third and play Aces Sky next. Aces Sky delivered a thrashing to the Conquerors, winning 95-53. Sky came out ferociously, with Addison Edwards helping put them at a 15-point lead at quarter-time. Conquerors attempted to return the pressure with a great three-pointer from Karinda Farrant to open the second quarter. But the Sky’s one-two punch of Edwards and Catherine Hough topped off with two shots from outside from Isabella Wilmot put Skys in front by 29 at half-time. From there the Conquerors could not keep up, and scored 27 points in the second half against Sky’s 42 points. Conquerors’ Karinda Farrant scored 21 points for her side, while sharpshooter Isabella Wilmot scored four three-pointers for Sky. Sky are only behind Navy on the ladder through percentage, working their way up, while Conquerors continue their run at the bottom of the ladder, with their only win this season a result of a forfeit. Conquerors take on Eaton Eagles next Tuesday while Aces Sky face off against Aces Navy. Eaton Eagles forfeited their match against Tornadoes Red as they were unable to field a side. Eagles play Conquerors next Tuesday while Tornadoes Red take on top-of-the-ladder Tornadoes Black. Round 18 will be played next Tuesday, January 30 as all teams have Friday off due to the public holiday.
