World premiere of The Naked Wanderer set for Bunbury during Cinefest Oz
A film shot predominantly in Bunbury and the South West will make its world premiere at CinefestOz in August.
At a special pre-launch event for the festival it was announced The Naked Wanderer would be screened for the first time at a red-carpet event in Bunbury.
CinefestOz chairwoman Helen Shirvington said securing the premiere showed the festival’s commitment to championing the region’s film industry.
“This is a film made in WA by West Australians,” she said,
“It is an absolute honour to have it screen at a festival that shines the spotlight on and celebrates local Australian film.”
Alan Lindsay directed the film and co-produced it with Bunbury’s Helen Clucas.
It stars Angus MacLaren and Natasha Liu Bordizzo with a guest appearance made by John Cleese, it is also the first screenplay written by Margaret River’s Callan Durlik.
He said premiering the film in Bunbury brought the production full circle.
“We had five or six actors read the script for the film in front of an audience at CinefestOz back in 2015,” he said.
“That gave us the chance to get audience feedback and it ended up rating really well.”
Production for the film started in 2017 and shooting was done on location in Bunbury, Dardanup, Harvey and Capel as well as in the State’s north.
At Friday’s event Mr Lindsay said the South West was an ideal spot to shoot scenes which could pass for almost anywhere in WA.
“We are thrilled the world premiere is happening in Bunbury, where we had so much community support making the movie,” he said.
CinefestOz will run from August 28 to September 1 throughout the South West.
The Naked Wanderer is the first film to be announced for the festival, the full program will be released on July 26.
