A man has died in a light plane crash in north Queensland.

Police say the man in his seventies was the pilot and sole occupant of the aircraft which crashed on Friday at Nosnillor station, 90 kilometres south of Charters Towers.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau says the aircraft was reported to be conducting a flight from Winton to Bowen when it was reported missing.

Two transport safety investigators are being deployed to the accident site and are expected to be there for a number of days.

The ATSB is asking anyone who may have seen the aircraft in any phase of its flight, or who may have footage, to make contact.
