Flights between Perth and Sydney have largely avoided the major delays affecting Sydney airport today.
This is despite almost 100 domestic or international services travelling from Sydney having been delayed or cancelled.
The disruption was caused by staffing issues within Airservice Australia’s air traffic control operations, with a shortage of controllers forcing restrictions on the number of aircraft able to move through Sydney airport.
Qantas has reported 50 delays and four cancellations, while Jetstar and Virgin Australia have also been affected, with 20 and 25 delays respectively.
Some passengers were reportedly left waiting on aircraft on the tarmac for up to two hours.
Airservices Australia introduced Air Traffic Flow Management measures to manage the reduced capacity while maintaining safety.
The restrictions have since been lifted, with the agency saying the situation has been resolved and no further significant delays are expected.
Despite the disruption, Perth-Sydney services have not experienced widespread impacts today.
