St Augustine Church has partnered with Target to bring Christmas cheer to people who are not so fortunate.

The church hopes to collect about 400 gifts for the Uniting Care and Target Christmas Appeal for clients of places such as the South West Refuge and Intown Centre.

Coordinator Dennis Evans said the appeal needed a variety of toys that included footballs, basketballs, dolls and soft toys suitable for all age groups.

"My mother used to say that giving was better than receiving and that's something I still believe," he said.

"We know that it is tough economic times for some people, but we are asking for people to donate to the cause."

Target will accept donations of $1 or more in store to go towards gifts bought by St Augustine Church.

Church member Stephen Foster said in his retirement he wanted to do something for someone else and the appeal provided that opportunity.

Target store manager Paul Willey said the partnership with the church was about wanting to engage the community and give something back.
