City Beach: Trae Black fighting for life in intensive care unit at RPH, almost a week on from grisly attack

A man whose leg was severed in a gruesome attack in City Beach remains in hospital fighting for his life. Trae Black is in the intensive care unit at Royal Perth Hospital almost a week after the bloody altercation with his workmate on Monday. Mr Black’s leg was severed after he was run over by Matthew William Lawson. Mr Lawson then bashed the 29-year-old with a claw hammer. Eyewitnesses — including an off-duty doctor — rushed to Mr Black‘s aid, applying a tourniquet to his leg and calling emergency services. Earlier this week, Mr Black’s father Troy thanked the first people on the scene who helped his son. “We would like to thank those people at the scene who went to his aid and the first responders. It’s our understanding that if it had not been for their intervention, Trae would have died before reaching the hospital,” he said. “We would also like to thank the staff at RPH for the outstanding care that they are giving Trae, and for supporting our family.” He said his son has a long way to go to recover, but he will “fight” to overcome his injuries. Mr Lawson has since admitted to a charge of attempted murder over the attack in the Perth Magistrates Court.
