Rottnest Island to get more updated units, as workers’ accommodation moves to next phase

A new wave of accommodation upgrades are coming to Perth’s island getaway as the State Government opens tendering for the single-biggest investment on Rottnest. Tired and dated self-contained units at Longreach Bay and Fay’s Bay will be refurbished after a successful upgrade of more than 60 accommodations at Geordie Bay and South Thomson. Due for completion in the middle of next year, the refits will include modernised kitchens and bathrooms, new furniture, fixtures and fittings and improved outdoor amenities. It comes as the Government moves a $98 million workers’ accommodation project — designed to free up space on the island for visitors — to the tendering phase. The development on Parker Point Road will offer almost 150 new units, giving island businesses a new attraction for staff. Among other upgrades Tourism Minister Rita Saffioti will announce on Thursday to “future-proof” the beloved getaway, the Island will also upgrade its electrical system to reach a 75 per cent renewable energy usage. “Rottnest Island is an iconic tourism destination, visited by hundreds of thousands of visitors and locals every year,” Ms Saffioti said. “It’s vital we continue to futureproof and plan for the island’s growing popularity through investments in new worker accommodation, which will support local businesses and essential infrastructure like energy. “Of course, we also need to make sure we’re providing the best possible experience for visitors now, which is why we’re progressing with our program of upgrades across the Stay Rottnest accommodation across the island.” The announcement comes just weeks after the first night ferries for the summer started, with the last service leaving the island at 9pm from Thursday to Sunday until January. Making the announcement last month, Ms Saffioti said the extended ferry service was designed to allow day visitors to experience the island after dark, enjoy the sunset or dine at restaurants before a late return to Perth.
