An award-winning South West doctor has been accused of raping two 15-year-old girls — one who was working in his home and another he regularly met in sex-for-cash arrangements. Veteran medico Douglas William McCarthy was arrested on Monday, and charged with 10 charges of raping and six charges of sexually assaulting a child aged over 13 and under 16. Dr McCarthy, 60, is also charged with raping the girl after she turned 16, possessing a naked image of her when she was 15 and procuring a child to engage in sexual behaviour. He was refused bail by police. Police prosecutors told the Perth Magistrates Court on Tuesday that Dr McCarthy forced himself onto the teenager while she was staying the night his Halls Head apartment. She had been employed by the doctor — work not related to his medical career — and had been given a room to sleep in after looking after one of his three children, police allege. The court was told Dr McCarthy’s other victim had visited one of his properties over a nine-month period, with several of her friends. Police claim the group — all 15 years old — was “regularly” given payments between $100 and $150 in exchange for sex. Child abuse detectives are speaking with three of the girls, who may come forward with their own allegations of sexual abuse, according to police prosecutors. The court was told the girls met Dr McCarthy through one of his “associates”. Dr McCarthy — a general practitioner in WA’s South West — has been practising medicine for the past 36 years. Last year, the doctor was given a long service recognition at the WA Rural Health Awards, presented by then WA governor Kim Beazley. The citation said Dr McCarthy had enjoyed a varied career working as a GP anaesthetist; in the Peel Health Campus emergency department; and as a clinical supervisor for the Night GP after hours phone service. He has also been a member of the Modern Medical Skin Cancer Clinic team since it was formed in 2004, involving skin cancer management and surgery, along with support to the emergency department at Donnybrook Hospital. Earlier this month, Dr McCarthy’s Peel home was raided by police, where they allegedly uncovered naked images of the teenager on his phone. Prosecutors told the court the mother of one of his victims saw a snap chat message from Dr McCarthy on her daughter’s phone. “They can’t force you to make a statement,” Dr McCarthy is accused of saying to the girl. A bail application by the doctor continues.
