Perth residents have woken to lightning, thunder, rain and a smoke haze — with more expected as the morning progresses.

The rumbling of thunder could be heard from early on Wednesday morning as storms rolled in off the coast.

Rain, some of it heavy, was reported from Gingin in the north to Mandurah in the south.

Perth had received 10.6mm of rain, with Jandakot getting 14mm and Rottnest Island 9.6mm.

Early risers snapped photographs of the storms as they moved across the metropolitan area.

The Bureau of Meteorology said storms would likely remain across the area throughout the morning and into the early afternoon.

Despite this, Perth is not forecast to receive more than 1mm of rain, with the temperature to reach 26C.

Motorists are urged to take care on the roads, with some slippery conditions expected.

It comes on top of the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions issuing a smoke warning for Perth for Wednesday morning.

Parks and Wildlife Service firefighters were able to progress with prescribed burns around 40km away from Perth on Tuesday, which will filter to the city.

DBCA Swan Region Regional Leader Fire Management Brodie Selby explained that the burn is taking place after careful planning and preparation.

“The smoke is the result of couple of large landscape burns which is happening at the back of Perth Hills Forest, which is really important part of our risk reduction prescribed burning program,” he said.

A trough will also impact a huge part of the State, from the Pilbara all the way to the Great Southern area.
