Western Australian health authorities issue new alert after fifth measles case detected in returned traveller

A health alert has been issued across Perth after a traveller returned from overseas with measles.
It is the fifth measles case in Western Australia this year, with 10 new exposure sites listed across the city’s east and inner suburbs.
An infected person visited the St John of God Emergency Department in Midland on Friday, as well as shopping centres, grocery stores, eateries and a chiropractor at Ellenbrook, Aveley, Morley, Mount Hawthorn and Mount Lawley between March 5 and 13 this year.
A WA Health spokesman said measles was highly infectious and could develop from around 7 to 18 days after being exposed to the virus.

They encouraged people to check the exposure site list and monitor for symptoms for 7 to 18 days if they were at the named locations at the dates and times listed.
“Measles is highly infectious and can spread via airborne droplets to people close by,” a spokesman said.
Measles symptoms include fever, tiredness, runny nose, a cough, sore red eyes and red blotchy skin that appeared about 3 or four days later.
“People with measles usually feel very unwell, and some may end up in hospital,” a spokesman said.
“Complications may include pneumonia, and less often, encephalitis (inflammation of the brain).”

Authorities urged anyone who developed symptoms of measles to put on a mask, isolate and seek medical care to be tested for the disease.
“Before visiting a general practice clinic or emergency department, it is important to call ahead to let them know of a potential measles infection, so they can provide instruction on where to go and ensure appropriate isolation measures are taken to prevent spread to other patients or staff,” a spokesman said.
“Follow their instructions, including wearing a mask when attending.”
Anyone concerned they may have measles and require medical advice after hours can contact healthdirect on 1800 022 222.
