Two-time Olympian Ciara Mageean has died aged 34, just weeks after marrying her long-term partner.
The Irish running champion — who was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer in May 2025 — passed away on Sunday after an 18-month battle.
“At 6:30am this morning, Ciara lost her battle with cancer surrounded by her loved ones,” a post published to her Instagram stated.
“A beloved daughter, sister, wife, friend and inspiration to so many, she will be deeply missed.”
“Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam (may her soul rest in peace).”
The devastating news prompted an outpouring of love from people across the globe, with Aussie Olympian Jessica Hull saying she has “no words”.
“Just the most beautiful person in every way imaginable,” Hull said.
“You will be so missed, our hearts and love are with Tommy and your family.
“Lucky to have shared some miles with you but even more special to have celebrated milestones at the finish line together, I’m so grateful for every moment, rest easy Ciara ❤️❤️❤️.”
Chelsea soccer star Katie McCabe also commented: “Rest in peace Ciara ❤️ sending all my love, thoughts and prayers 🪽.”
The tragic loss comes just three weeks after Mageean tied the knot with her long-term partner Thomas Moran at Belfast City Hall on October 12.
The happy newlyweds shared beautiful pictures and videos of the ceremony, with Mageean saying it was an “incredible day”.
Mageean specialised in the 1500m event, winning gold in the 2024 European Athletics Championships.
