Arylene Westlake-Jennings: After $2000 worth of dodgy transactions here’s your warning to check your card

A simple text message from the bank. “We have noticed an unusual transaction on your card for $256.31 at (name of famous toy shop) and have placed a temporary block on your card. Please reply 0 if you have NOT authorised this transaction and we will call you shortly.” Oh no. A nauseating phone call and a painstaking review of the transactions revealed almost $2000 in dodgy payments had occurred quietly over the past two weeks — buried deep amid grocery bills, utility charges and an expectedly extensive list of Christmas shopping. The bank unfortunately also did not detect another dodgy $350 spent at a major electrical store that morning I got that text message, a transaction that occurred at the same time I was using my card at a department store 40km away. My credit card details had likely been “skimmed”, the bank representative from the fraud department explained — likely when I was overseas just a couple of months prior. I’m informed it is a known strategy to not use the cloned card immediately and for the scammers to make these transactions over the festive period in the hopes they go undetected. And if not for my bank, it would have probably taken me weeks to discover what was happening as the credit card was still safely stowed in my wallet. There’s no promise I will get the money back, which isn’t great when the weekly grocery bill is starting to resemble that of my fortnightly mortgage repayment. So if your account balance seems a little off, it could be time to sift through your transactions with a fine-toothed comb.
