Federal MP Luke Gosling has stood down from his government position in the wake of fresh charges being levelled against him.
The member for Solomon, in the Northern Territory, released a statement on Wednesday announcing he would step down from his position as Special Envoy for Defence, Veterans’ Affairs and Northern Australia.
Mr Gosling is on bail after he was charged last month over the alleged assault of Northern Territory Administrator David Connolly.
He has now been charged with breaching his bail conditions, which police say occurred on August 14.

Sign up“I categorically deny all the allegations made against me,” Mr Gosling said.
“However, due to the ongoing media attention and the distraction this is causing to the business of government, I have decided to temporarily stand aside as Special Envoy for Defence, Veterans’ Affairs and Northern Australia until these matters have been heard.”
The 54-year-old maintained his innocence, saying he will “rigorously defend” the allegations against him.
Mr Gosling will appear in Darwin Local Court on September 30.
