Prime Minister Scott Morrison has arrived in New York City ahead of his one on one meeting with US President Joe Biden later today.

Mr Morrison jetted into John F. Kennedy airport amid a furore and continued tensions over Australia’s decision to tear up a $90 billion submarine deal with France.

“It would be naive to think a decision of this nature was not going to cause some disappointment,” Mr Morrison said as EU leaders meet to discuss the fallout tonight.

“To suggest somehow that this decision could have been taken without some disappointment I think would have been very naive.

“It was a tough decision and those are always difficult.”

Mr Morrison said he was not having direct talks with French President Emmanuel Macron despite US President Joe Biden seeking such an audience overnight.

“There is not an opportunity for that at this time,” Mr Morrison said.

“That will come and we will be patient about that. It is important we continue engaging with other Governments in the region too.

“What Australia does is contribute to the piece and stability in the region.”
