The Collie Eagles were their own worst enemy in their 24-point win over Augusta-Margaret River on Saturday at the Collie Recreation Ground.

Despite dominating much of the play all game, the Eagles’ jitters in front of goal cost them and it took them until late in the final term to seal their 7.15 (57) to 4.9 (33) win over the Hawks.

Even worse for the Eagles is a suspected left hamstring injury to prime midfielder Corey Griggs, who had put up a best-on-ground showing until he left the field and went into the changerooms with the injury midway through the last quarter.

The Eagles had all the play their own way early and set about hurting the Hawks on the scoreboard, but by the time the light rain set in during the second quarter, they had managed to kick just three goals from eight scoring shots.

This gave the Hawks a glimmer of hope, as the visitors kicked two quick goals against the run of play in the second term to still be in the hunt at half-time.

Augusta-Margaret River ruckman Harry Morgan battled manfully in the middle of the ground for the Hawks, often winning the ball from his own taps and out-muscling his much smaller opposition.

Unfortunately, the rest of his side failed to put the Eagles’ midfield under pressure, with Corey and Chase Griggs, along with Kyle Shanahan proving to be too much.

Mitch Lynn, Mitch Gerrans (two goals) and Max Paterson put up strong performances and had the Hawks in the hunt until late in the final term, when the Eagles found their range and kicked three goals to seal the win.
