VideoIt’s the news that every WA footy fan has been dreaming of — the State Government has thrown its weight behind efforts for Perth to host the grand final.

Optus Stadium is likely to tick off another major milestone in its short but celebrated history today when West Coast confronts Carlton.

Perth’s premier venue is expected to welcome fan number four million.

The tally as it stands is 3,980,605 and, even with poor weather forecast, West Coast should be able to muster the 19,395 required to reach the target.

Optus Stadium is also gearing up for its 100th event which is scheduled to be West Coast’s round 13 clash with Greater Western Sydney on Sunday, August 23.

The biggest attendance at any event remains 62,622 for Ed Sheeran’s second concert in 2018.

The Wallabies’ stunning victory over the All Blacks in last year’s Bledisloe Cup Test sits on top of the sports rankings with 61,241, just ahead of State of Origin on 59,721.

The Eagles hold the AFL record with 59,608 watching their 2018 preliminary final smashing of Melbourne.

The venue has hosted all three forms of cricket, NRL, AFL, AFLW and WAFL, rugby union, NRL, six concerts — including Sheeran, Taylor Swift, Eminem, U2 and Queen — as well as soccer greats Manchester United and Chelsea and an A-League grand final. Not bad for just over two years.

The first-ever event was a Twenty20 match between the Perth Scorchers and England Lions on December 11, 2017 in front of a trial crowd of 5000.

Hawthorn will be defending a record when it takes on Fremantle tomorrow at Optus Stadium. The Hawks and Hobart Hurricanes are both 3-0 and have the only 100 per cent records at Optus Stadium.

For the trivia buffs, Perth Glory have never scored a goal at Optus Stadium in five hours of play.

Glory fans, however, could argue they technically scored a goal in the penalty shootout against Sydney in the A-League grand final which they lost 4-1, but they are yet to hit the back of the net in open play.
