Returning West Coast Eagles and Fremantle Dockers players and officials will be permitted to quarantine at home when they return to Perth from the Gold Coast.

Mark McGowan revealed Police Commissioner Chris Dawson would write to both clubs today advising them of the decision, which will be subject to strict provisions designed to minimise their contact with the wider community.

The two sides will be permitted to play against at each other at Optus Stadium during the quarantine period, opening the door to a Western Derby in mid-July in front of a potentially packed crowd.

“When some of the (Eagles and Dockers) team members came back (from overseas or interstate) prior to the season commencing they were required to home quarantine,” Mr McGowan said.

“That will be the restriction that is placed upon them. They'll be able to train subject to certain very strict conditions and the Eagles and Dockers, within the 14 days quarantine, will be able to play one another in a derby if that's possible.”

Mr McGowan said discussions with the AFL over a Perth hub were continuing but that visiting Victorian sides would likely be permitted to play against each other during their mandatory fortnight of quarantine.

“That's a little bit more difficult because obviously we're watching Essendon closely,” he said.

“So the Essendon arrangements will determine potentially which teams can come for a hub.

“We are continuing to work with the AFL on that arrangement. If they were to hub here they would be subject to a quarantine in a hotel.

“During the quarantine period it's my expectation that those interstate teams, particularly the Victorian teams, wouldn't be able to play Western Australia teams.”

“They may well be able to (play against each other) within the hub arrangement in which they are in effect in a bubble.”

While crowds of up to 60,000 would be permitted to watch West Coast take on Fremantle – if the fixture was held July 18 or later – Mr McGowan said a decision on allowing spectators at matches involving Victorian sides during their quarantine period had not yet been reached.

“That's one of the issues that needs to be worked out and what the distancing arrangements might need to be between those Victorian teams and the crowd,” he said.
