An Australian radio host has mistakenly claimed that retired AFL player Mitch Robinson had come out as gay in an embarrassing on-air gaffe.

Former champion Olympic swimmer turned radio host Susie O’Neill was speaking on Brisbane’s Nova 106.9 Nick, Luttsy & Susie show on Monday, when she mistakenly said the former Brisbane Lions player had made a revelation about his sexuality.

It is believed O’Neill was referring to former West Coast Eagles player Mitch Brown who recently came out as the first openly bisexual men’s AFL player.

“Mitch Robinson came out recently in the AFL,” she said.

“What? I don’t think it’s Mitch Robinson,” co-host David ‘Luttsy’ Lutteral replied.

O’Neill quickly corrected her mistake, saying, “It’s the wrong name. Sorry, sorry, sorry!”

Co-host Nick Allen-Ducat then chimed in jovially, saying, “Robbo’s (Robinson) going to get inundated!” while Lutteral said “Robbo listens to this show”.

Robinson, who retired from the AFL in 2022, then called into Nova 106.9, putting on a “stereotypically gay” voice while saying he had to “explain himself” after several people picked up on O’Neill’s on-air blunder.

“Hey guys!,” Robinson said.

“I’ll have to go on my Wikipedia page and change the bios.

“It’s probably not the best thing that I’ve woken up to.

“I appreciate it that Susie O’Neill knows my name, that’s pretty cool.”

The situation was then brought to the attention of Mitch Brown who took to social media to express his disappointment that Robinson put on a voice to act as a gay man.

“Big fan of your work Robbo & nova but I think you guys can do a bit better here,” Brown said in a social media post.

“I know people will say I’m being too sensitive but what’s the punchline here?” Brown asked.

“A stereotype of what queer people sound like? Why are we still accepting this everyday stuff as okay?

“And ps I don’t sound like that. Just an ordinary ‘hello guys’ for this bisexual.”

Speaking to PerthNow, Brown says there is “absolutely nothing wrong” with “sounding. . .stereotypically queer” but that incidents like this proves queer people are seen “through a pretty narrow lens”.

“The reality is that there is no one way to be queer. We’re as diverse as any other community,” he told PerthNow.

“The problem is when people assume that all queer people are the same. . .Generalisations can make people feel like they don’t belong if they don’t fit a certain mould.”

PerthNow has contacted Nova for comment.
