Melbourne’s star defender Steven May will miss up to a month of football after a nasty accidental elbow to the face from Geelong’s Tom Hawkins.

A bloodied and dazed May was taken from the field in his side’s 25-point win over Geelong at the MCG on Sunday.

He was taken to hospital where scans confirmed the defender suffered a fractured right eye socket as well as concussion — alarmingly, his second in just five weeks.

Teammate Adam Tomlinson said May’s injury “wasn’t pretty” as he came from the field.

“Fingers crossed he’s going to be ok,” he said on SEN.

“It wasn’t pretty on the sideline.

“His eye blew up pretty much by the time he got to the dugout.

“(His eye) was already closed over.”

Tomlinson confirmed he had spoken to his star teammate after the ordeal.

“He said he was in good spirits and he was going to be ok, but it wasn’t great when it first happened.

“He’s at home and resting.

“Fingers crossed he’s going to be out for the shortest time.

“He’s such a vital player to us. What he does week in, week out is phenomenal.

“The way he has developed at the Dees alone has been amazing.”

May was discharged from hospital on Sunday night and posted a message to the fans.

“Thanks for all the support,” he said.

“Overwhelmed by all, I’m fine and was just a freak accident.

“Glad the boys got the win, I’ll be back soon.”
