The umpire who paid the match-deciding free kick to Brisbane in last week’s preliminary final against Hawthorn has been backed in to officiate in the AFL grand final.

Hayden Meyer, who has been praised for his gutsy call to ping Jarman Impey for holding the ball in the final minute, has been selected to umpire the premiership decider.

7NEWS reporter Tom Morris revealed Meyer has been picked alongside veteran Brett Rosebury, who also umpired the preliminary final.

Nick Foot and Brendon Hosking complete the four-man team with Nathan Williamson the emergency.

Meyer was subjected to abuse from Hawthorn co-captain James Sicily and defender Tom Barrass moments after the final siren sounded last Saturday night.

Sicily was fined $10,000, while Barrass was hit with a $5000 sanction.

“Obviously if I had my time again, I wouldn’t do it. That sort of stuff’s not play on and if I see Hayden tonight, I’ll make sure I go over and shake his hand and apologise,” Sicily told 7NEWS on Monday night.

“And if I don’t see him tonight, I’ll do it next year during the season sometime.”

Meyer and Rosebury were both booed off the field last Saturday night as angry Hawthorn fans threw cans and bottles in ugly scenes.

Rosebury paid the deliberate out of bound decision against Mitch Lewis in the dying stages that also drew criticism from Hawthorn fans.

Rosebury will be most experienced grand final umpire, officiating his 10th premiership decider, while it will be Meyer’s third.

Foot, meanwhile, has been selected after he was involved in his own controversial situation earlier in the year.

Foot was the umpire who reported Port Adelaide superstar Zak Butters for questioning his integrity during the Gather Round clash against St Kilda.

Butters was ultimately fined at the tribunal before being cleared at the appeals board on a technicality.

The saga put the spotlight on Foot’s outside work with gambling giant Sportsbet, which ultimately saw them cut ties with the umpire.

It will be Foot’s second grand final after also umpiring the 2024 decider.

The goals umpires and boundary umpires are expected to be confirmed on Wednesday.
