West Coast’s tough start in the AFLW continued with a 28-point thumping at the hands of Greater Western Sydney at Blacktown International Sportspark on Sunday.

Such was the Giants’ dominance, the Eagles were in danger of becoming the first team to go scoreless in an AFLW game, before youngster Mikayla Bowen got the team on the board early in the last term to avoid the unwanted record.

Eagle Imahra Cameron’s late goal just before full-time added some respectability to the 6.6 (42) to 2.2 (14) scoreline.

As has been every week, club leaders Dana Hooker (23 disposals) and Emma Swanson (19 disposals and six tackles) led from the front, but they were simply outclassed.

Giant Rebecca Privitelli (three goals) was a dominant force up forward and midfielder Alyce Parker (22 disposals) put in a big performance in the midfield.

The Game AFL 2024

To make matters worse, West Coast will be sweating on the fitness of two-time All Australian Hooker, who left the field late in distress after taking a boot to the jaw as she attempted to smother a kick.

King Long, Kick Wrong

The Eagles simply played into the Giants hands with their kicking and it didn’t look good.

Instead of trying to work their way up the ground, they constantly kicked long down the line, with the Giants easily able to pick it off and get it moving their way.

The strategy works if you have a big target up forward, but West Coast were undersized and outgunned by defenders Tanya Hetherington and Elle Bennetts, who took eight marks between them.

At the other end GWS had options aplenty, but they were using it a lot around the ground, as their midfield was simply too good and composed for the young Eagles.

Eagles’ Bowen Arrow

She made history as the first signing for West Coast’s women’s team and it is easy to see why the club gave Bowen the honour.

A pint-sized midfielder, the 18-year-old inspired her tired looking team in the first quarter with a couple of big tackles which she was rewarded for.

Still has to work on her composure with ball in hand but with little up forward to kick to, it is hard to be too critical.

With a fantastic attitude and plenty of improvement left in her, Bowen is shaping as a star of the future for the expansion club and is one bright spark in their early season struggles.

Finished with 14 disposals and their first goal of the game.

Privitelli Power

A former defender at Carlton, Privitelli has rejuvenated her career in the orange and brown as a forward with strong hands.

In easily the best performance of her career, the 170cm key position player was simply too good for young Eagles defender Sophie McDonald, as she leapt over packs and clunked big marks.

Despite not playing AFLW last year, she looks like she could be a power player for the Giants as they pursue finals, finishing with three goals in a best-on-ground performance.
