Basketball Australia have appointed former NSW Netball boss Carolyn Campbell as interim chief executive officer after Jerril Rechter's sudden departure this month.

Rechter spent just over two years in the job but, before a potentially historic Olympic campaign in July for the Boomers and Opals, gave two days' notice as she made her April 1 exit.

Campbell, who rose from from Netball NSW's game development manager to enjoy a 15-year stint in charge of the organisation, will take the reins while BA searches for a full-time replacement in the "coming months".

It means Campbell is likely to oversee Australia's campaigns at the delayed Tokyo Games.

"Ms Campbell is a highly regarded, vastly experienced sports administrator who understands the inner workings of national sporting organisations and will be able to hit the ground running during what is a busy, yet exciting year for Australian basketball," BA chair Ned Coten said.
