Former Australian Test cricketer Stuart MacGill has blown up at his own podcast co-host in an aggressive, unhinged and expletive-laden attack.

In an episode of Cricket Unfiltered, which was live streamed on Monday night before being posted in full, MacGill calls co-host Andrew Menczel a “f****** idiot”, a “moron”, and a “muppet” before the show ends abruptly.

The episode had been going for around 19 minutes when Menczel made a reference to the shocking treatment to which Candice Warner was subjected by the South African crowd during Australia’s infamous tour in 2018, particularly denouncing the Proteas fans who turned up to the game wearing Sonny Bill Williams masks.

The masks were a reference to Warner’s infamous encounter with Williams at a pub in 2007 when the pair were filmed kissing in a toilet cubical, six years before she met husband David.

Menczel was trying to condemn the “low behaviour” of the fans, saying they went “way over the line”, but MacGill became incensed that the incident was even brought up at all and launched his hostile tirade that derails the show over the next three minutes, which finishes with Menczel abruptly ending the show.

During the on-air argument, MacGill threatens to never work with Menczel again if the blow-up is edited out of the episode.

The segment begins with Menczel saying: “I do think the sexist treatment of Candice Warner by the South African crowds went way over the line.

“Going in with Sonny Bill Williams masks to try and taunt Warner is low. That is low behaviour. It’s targeting his wife which I think is pretty poor and they can go pretty low.”

MacGill took immediate exception to the comment.

“Well I think it’s pretty low talking about it for starters, Menners,” he said.

“So, you didn’t need to go into details there, I think that’s shit. You’re a f****** idiot.

“You shouldn’t go into details about things like this because you’re doing exactly the same as the crowd, OK?”

Menczel tries to explain that he was only calling out the poor behaviour, but is drowned out as MacGill begins to raise his voice.

“No, no you are. Listen to me now! You’ve raised exactly the same issues, you’re saying the same thing that they did, and that is shit, so we’re not going to talk about that anymore,” MacGill said.

“If we’re going to talk about issues to do with one particular player, we can say they’ve talked about personal issues relating to that player.”

Menczel then attempts to restore the peace, saying “no, that’s fair”, reasoning that he only “wanted to draw and example of what they wore” to denounce the bad behaviour, before MacGill’s temper flares even further.

“No, I’m right, mate,” MacGill says.

“Menners, Menners, Menners, what I want you to do right this minute — because otherwise this is going to be a very, very short-lived relationship — you need to respect players and their families a lot more than you do at the moment.”

Menczel tries to stand up for himself: “I do respect them, that’s why I ... I felt sorry for her being targeted.”

But MacGill was seeing red at this point.

“You did exactly the same as the South African crowd,” the former leg-spinner said.

“Listen, mate. Listen, she’s (Warner) a friend of mine as well. Listen, I feel sorry for you because you’re obviously so pig-headed because you do not realise that you said exactly the same thing as the South African crowd. Exactly the same.”

Menczel: “I didn’t bring anything up. I didn’t bring anything up. I didn’t go into detail.”

MacGill: “You did. You are a moron. Continue. Next topic.”

Still committed to get the show back on track, Menczel tries to compose himself.

“Alright, next topic, fair enough,” he says.

“Alright, moving to the Bangladesh tour...”

But MacGill refused to drop it.

“... and if you cut that out, it’s the last time I ever work with you,” he threatens.

Menczel: “Oh no, I won’t cut it out at all, I’ll leave it all in. But I just think you’re missing my point. You’re missing what I’m trying to say. I’m trying to give Warner some grace.”

MacGill: “MOVE ON. MOVE ON. MOVE ON. MOVE ON. MOVE ON.

“Listen, you muppet. When I say move on, I’m not saying keep talking about something.”

Menczel: “Yeah, but it’s my show as well, I can keep talking.”

MacGill: “Go on, keep talking.”

Menczel: “I will keep talking. I want to move on to the Bangladesh stuff.”

MacGill: “Good.”

Menczel tries his best to move on but is clearly distracted by the lingering tension in the room.

“It’s a good blow up. You look really upset?” he says.

MacGill: “I am upset with you. Move on.”

Menczel: “OK, if you don’t want to talk about it, that’s fine. Not about that (Warner), just why you’re upset.”

MacGill: “You’re a joke, mate.”

Menczel: “Why am I a joke?”

MacGill: “Move on. MOVE ON.”

Menczel: “Well, you seem very irritable.”

MacGill: “Yeah, mate, look, I may jump across the mic at any second.”

Menczel has one last attempt at rescuing the show before giving up altogether and ending the show.

“… Actually, you know what, that’s it for this episode. Thanks for joining us,” he says.

MacGill: “You sure? Cool. That’s great. Cool.”
