Mitch Marsh: Veteran West Australian star’s domestic cricket return ends with cheap dismissal

Mitch Marsh has been left fuming by a caught-and-bowled dismissal that cut short his return to domestic cricket in Western Australia’s victory over high-flying Victoria.
The Australian white-ball captain was dismissed for 17 when he hit a low return catch to Victorian paceman Xavier Crone, who came forward to take the catch inches from the ground.
Marsh remained at the crease and protested with umpires before eventually being given out and leaving the field.
It left teammates Ashton Turner, who finished unbeaten on 71 off 61 balls and Sam Whiteman who made an unbeaten 70 off 65 deliveries, to chase down Victoria’s 285 at the Junction Oval on Tuesday.
Replays showed Crone had got the palm of his hand under the ball before completing the catch.
Marsh — who will play for WA in the Sheffield Shield match against Victoria starting Thursday — was on just two after 22 balls, strangled by the hosts’ new-ball bowling at Junction Oval on Tuesday afternoon.

He then launched two tracer-bullet boundaries — one a pull shot backward of square and one over the top of long-off — off Cam McClure the over before he was dismissed.
The veteran has been touted as a potential wildcard selection for Australia’s Test team later in the Ashes series and could even open the batting for WA at the MCG later this week.
“Who knows where he’ll bat, but it’s just exciting to see him play for WA,” teammate Cooper Connolly said.
“All the boys love having around the group. I think he’s just exciting to be around, he lifts the group, everyone speaks about him highly and he just brings the team morale up so high.
“Hopefully he scores some runs for WA.”
The victory keeps WA in the hunt for a spot in the final of the one-day competition, to be played in February.
Left-arm quick Joel Paris took 4-62 from his 10 overs as Victoria’s batters struggled to go on with a start. Tom Rogers was out for 50, Peter Handscomb made 49 and Ollie Peake and Sam Harper were both dismissed for 54 before the tail crumbled to be all out for 285.
Young firebrand Mahli Beardman too 2-60 from 9.1 overs and the other wickets were shared between teenaged quick Albert Esterhuysen, Ashton Agar, Connolly and all-rounder Keaton Critchell.
Connolly will not play in the shield game from Thursday, confirming post-match he will play for Australia A against England Lions in Brisbane later this week.
It means he is likely to be the straight swap for Marsh, although mystery surrounds where he will bat.
He had been touted as an option to open the batting for Australia if turned to later in the Ashes and WA coach Adam Voges has not ruled out that role for him in the four-day match.
That would mean breaking up the star partnership of Whiteman and Cam Bancroft.
