Perth cycling fans share story of incredible connection to Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard

As a two-time winner of the Tour de France, Jonas Vingegaard is one of cycling’s biggest names with a mountain of fans from around the world. Not many of those fans, though, can claim to have stayed in his childhood bedroom at his parents’ house in northern Denmark, decorated with trophies, medals and jerseys from his stellar career. That is something almost certainly unique to retired Perth couple June and Tom Power, who met Vingegaard’s parents Karina and Claus by chance at a French caravan park during the 2023 Tour and instantly struck up a friendship. “It was on Mt Tourmalet where Australian Jai Hindley had just won the stage,” June recalled. “There were lots of other people in the caravan park who had also watched the race. “I’d gone to the shower block jumping up and down with excitement after the finish and this woman said to me, ‘My son came fifth today.’ I said, ‘Congratulations, who is your son’, and she replied, ‘Jonas Vingegaard’. “I was stunned. He is cycling royalty, and he had won the Tour de France the year before. “That night Tom and Claus had many drinks and shared many stories, and Karina and I were like best friends. We spent the next day watching the race together and had a lovely time and then we took off in different directions, but we swapped details on Facebook. “Two days later Karina sent me a message to say she had saved us a spot at a different caravan park and that we must come. “We parked up and went and the friendship has been there ever since.” Both avid cycling fans, particularly after Tom took up riding during a health kick in 2007, the couple, who live in Warnbro in Perth’s southern suburbs, watched the Tour de France on SBS for many years before their first trip to see it in person, travelling in a motorhome in 2018. Having attended again in 2023 and loving every minute, they decided to expand their trip this year to take in all three grand tours — the Giro d’Italia, Tour de France and Vuelta a Espana. “We’ve stayed in contact for the past couple years and in between the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France this year we headed up to Denmark and spent a week there with them,” June said. “It was a lot of fun. And that’s the best part about the cycling community, you meet a lot of beautiful people. “We stayed in Jonas Vingegaard’s bedroom with all his cycling trophies and medals and jerseys. “We hope to meet up with them again during the Tour this year and they are planning to come and visit us in Australia next year. We are all big Jonas fans.” Tom said, like many Australians who travel to France to experience the Tour in person, they got their first taste from the SBS broadcast and were captivated by not only the competition, but also the scenery and culture. He said seeing the world’s most famous bike race up close, and at times getting to ride parts of the route himself, had only increased their passion. “We always watched on TV, and you would see the helicopter view with all the chateaux and the beauty of France, and we just fell in love with it,” he said. “Being at the race is a bit different. We plan the day before where we are going to stay and we pick a spot, usually on a bit of a hill so we get a bit of an elongated view of the riders going past, and then move on to find a new spot for the next day. “I go for a ride in the morning and then I get a stack of baguettes and give them to all the people staying around us.” SBS Tour de France broadcaster Matt Keenan, who met June and Tom while in Perth for the national road championships in January, told the incredible story of their chance meeting with Vingegaard’s parents on air during the recent Giro d’Italia, after spotting Tom in his bright shirt and waving a giant Australian flag on the side of the road. He said SBS’ expanded broadcast of the Tour, which now takes in the entire day of racing and offers on-demand replays and abbreviated recaps via the Tour Tracker app, had only boosted interest in the race back home. “The draw from the sporting perspective for people who are not rusted on cycling fans is the human endeavour,” Keenan, who will commentate his 19th Tour de France this year, said. “To see these riders four, five, or up to six hours a day for 21 days, they do 3500km and it is one of the original ultra-endurance sports. “For a lot of people, that gets them in as the first link is the stadium, the backdrop. “You can watch Wimbledon, or the Masters in golf and the venue is the same each time, whereas with the Tour de France it is a different venue every day. “You get taken on a journey through the history of the country.” Keenan said the development and increased accessibility of apps such as Strava, allowing anyone to track and share data like heart rate and power output, had also increased interest. “People can now compare themselves to the professionals,” he said. “You can take a trip overseas and ride up Alpe d’Huez and compare your time to the riders from the Tour de France. “Or you can see Tadaj Pogacar from his recent races had posted that he maintained 450 watts for 20 minutes. Most club cyclists would do 450 watts for 1 minute as an interval, so they can get that comparison as to how good the elite athletes are. “Normally comparison is the thief of joy, but when it comes to comparing yourself to professional athletes it is the generator of admiration.” This year’s Tour starts in Lille next Saturday and covers 3320km before finishing on the Champs-Elysees in Paris on Sunday, July 27.
