Australia's Brett Drewitt has the chance to give his golf career a huge boost after a timely change of form in the final event of the PGA Tour regular season.

Having missed the cut in his last six tournaments, 31-year-old Drewitt is three shots off the lead going into the weekend at the Wyndham Championship in North Carolina after rounds of 67 67.

Drewitt shot 80 77 in his last start at the Rocket Mortgage Classic amid 15 missed cuts from 22 starts this season and he sits a lowly 221st in the FedEx Cup standings with $US105,466 in prizemoney.

Americans Brandon Wu (67) and Ryan Moore (64) and South Korea's Joohyung Kim share the Wyndham Championship lead at nine under, one shot clear of Russell Henley (65), John Huh (71) and Sungjae Im (69).

In his second full season on the tour, Drewitt has a best result of tied 39th this season and his career-best is tied 27th in the 2016-17 season.

Fellow Australian Cameron Percy is tied 15th going into the weekend after following his opening 65 with a 70.

With four players yet to complete their second rounds due to a weather delay, Adam Scott looked set to scrape through the cut at two under after a 70 while fellow Aussie ex-world No.1 Jason Day withdrew ahead of Friday's second round due to an illness.

Day's positioning for the start of the FedEx Cup Playoffs at next week's St. Jude Championship in Memphis appears to be secure, however.

He entered this week at No.115 in the points list, and the top 125 advance to the first playoff event.

World No.34 Kim, 20, would be leading the Wyndham Championship by four shots had he not opened Thursday's first round with a quadruple-bogey eight.

"All I did was laugh," Kim said of the quadruple bogey. "I didn't really take it -- it's just one bad hole. Told myself, you know what, I've got plenty of holes to bring it back if I just play well on my next 35 holes, and that's exactly what I did."

Already ranked No. 34 in the world, Kim is playing on a special temporary membership and is in line to earn his full PGA Tour card for next season.

Other players are vying to keep their cards by ensuring they qualify for the field of 125 players who'll play the first leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs next week.

Moore entered the week No. 183 in the points standings. He's projected to leap to 68th thanks to his position at the Wyndham thus far.
