Immortal Bliss topped off his preparations for Kalgoorlie’s $1 million Golden Saddle (1200m) slot race with a decisive victory at Monday’s Belmont trials.

The five-year-old was allowed to find his feet through the early stages of the 1000m heat, tracking up three wide with cover before being taken deeper by Lucy Fiore at the 450m.

The I Am Immortal gelding cruised up to Cessation at the 200m to poke his nose in front. Despite late rallies from Keep Reading and Madame Magic, Fiore barely breathed on Immortal Bliss and the class galloper coasted to a contemptuous length-and-a-half success.

His trainer Dan Morton said the bay was on target for the Goldfields’ feature event on October 3 after a short break.

“It certainly was pleasing,” Morton said.

“He had a couple of weeks down at our property, just south of Pinjarra in Meelon.

“He’s rolled back into it, and we’ll have him fresh for Kalgoorlie.

“From what we’ve seen of him, he’s raced well fresh and just a very effective horse.”

TABtouch, who selected Immortal Bliss to race in their Golden Saddle slot, have installed him as the $3 market leader for the event ahead of Cessation ($4.60) and Lord Shiva ($8).

The eight-time winner produced fine displays to capture both the Beaufine Stakes (1000m) and Belmont Newmarket (1200m) at Listed level through the winter before his brief spell.

“He had to have a reset at some point, otherwise it would have been too long a prep,” Morton said.

“After Kalgoorlie, we’ve got ambitions of going for the Ascot features.”

Immortal Bliss is a $21 chance for the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) on November 28 and will be joined at the carnival by Morton’s star four-year-old King Of Light after initial plans to target Sydney’s $10 million Golden Eagle were shelved.

“I’m picking him up tomorrow (Tuesday) from Wayne Kiely at Peringa Equine,” Morton said.

“We were going to go to Sydney, but we aborted that. I wasn’t 100 percent happy with him post-race (when winning the Idyllic Prince Stakes) and if you’re not that and more, you’re kidding yourself putting him on a plane.

“He’s already in the field for the Railway. He’ll go to the lead-ups and then we’ve got the options of the Northerly or the Gold Rush.”

King Of Light is the $5 favourite for the Railway Stakes (1600m) and a $7 third fancy for the Northerly Stakes (1800m) behind Cosmic Crusader ($4f) and Fireball Miss ($5).

+ Perth Racing chief executive James Oldring says despite conjecture over the readiness of the Ascot track, he has no concerns with the venue less than four weeks from Opening Day.

Oldring said that usual renovation works had been successful, and he expected the track to be commensurate with last year’s condition.
