Western Australia is on the hunt for a new Sam Kerr with a live-action series inspired by the life of the Matildas superstar to begin filming in WA.
Kerr’s popular children’s series Sam Kerr Kicking Goals is set for a live-action adaptation, with filming to begin next year, charting the life of a young Kerr before she reached global stardom as Matildas and Chelsea captain.
Co-written by Kerr and Fiona Harris, the series has produced five books based on her journey of moving away from AFL as a young girl because there wasn’t a girls’ team and discovering her love of soccer.
Casting is already underway for which young actor will take on the role of Kerr, with the production expected to bring in more tha 130 jobs and $5 million as part of the Cook Government’s WA Production Attraction Incentive.
Creative Industries Minister Simone McGure said the series will not only showcase the rise of one of WA’s biggest ever athletes but also celebrate the state.
“I’m excited to announce that with the Cook Labor Government’s support, Sam Kerr Kicking Goals will film in Western Australia,” she said in a statement.
“The series will showcase all that Western Australia has to offer - including our world-class talent, crew, and diverse locations - while celebrating the story of one of our sporting greats.”
The Paramount production is set to begin filming in early next year and will coincide with the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil, where Kerr is set to lead the Matildas charge once again, with Kerr also serving as an executive producer.
The 33-year-old is currently playing in the National Women’s Soccer League for the league-leading Gotham FC following her departure from Chelsea earlier this year where she became the first player to score 80 career NWSL goals.
