Perth Glory have kick-started their A-League Men season as they achieved a near eight-year first in a 4-0 win over Adelaide United in their home opener at HBF Park.
Staring down the prospect of the worst three-game stretch to start a season in Perth’s history, Glory were home and hosed by half-time to pick up a valuable three points after losing their two opening matches.
In the first home game of their 30th anniversary season, Perth wound back the clock with not just fancy retro-inspired jackets and kits, but by serving up goals on a platter for their hungry fans.
Jaiden Kucharski, Tadi Kuzamba and Stefan Colakovski all struck in the first-half to mark the first time Glory had scored three goals in an opening 45 minutes since February 2019.
Matthew Ellis completed the rout with five minutes to play, while Glory remained defensively resolute to pick up their first clean sheet of the season and jump off the foot of the table and into eighth.
“The boys performed well in front of a loud Shed, and there’s a lot of upside from the performance as well,” coach Adam Griffiths said.
“We still had a few more goals, I think we could have could have taken, and we have to keep improving.
“There’s a few players still probably around 50, 60 per cent of their fitness level so there’s there’s a lot more work that needs to be done in terms of the players.
“We have to manage them, but some of the finishing was very good.”
While Griffiths threw a curveball pre-game by dropping goalkeeper Matt Sutton for debutant Daniel Solsky, it was nothing compared to the personnel decisions his opposite number made.
With Adelaide in the midst of four games in 11 days, coach Airton Andrioli unveiled a starting 11 with an average age of just 21.9 years-old, featuring three teenagers, two starting debutants and only two players over the age of 24.
And while Glory had just 34 per cent possession in the first-half, when Adelaide made mistakes, the hosts proved unerringly clinical.
With youth brings exuberance, and certainly Adelaide had that in spades early as Joey Garuccio buzzed around, Brody Burkitt proved a handful up top and centre-back Panagiotis Kikianis quarterbacked play out of defence.
But youth also brings inexperience and with Perth pressing high up the pitch in the 16th minute, Feyzo Kasumovic rolled an underhit pass across the face of his own goal and Kucharski gleefully pounced.
Four minutes later and Perth had doubled their money as impressive young right-back Kuzamba completed a move he started with his first goal in professional football.
After collecting a bouncing ball in midfield, the 19 year-old played a one-two with Lucas Scicluna, found Kucharski and bombed forward to receive the return pass before sweeping the ball past Joshua Smits in goal.
Perth had repeatedly targeted Smits under the high ball at corners, and they reaped their rewards on the half-hour mark when centre-back Cher Deng attacked the set-piece and out-duelled the ‘keeper, allowing Colakovski to poke home from close range.
Given the weight of their possessional dominance, plus an eagerness to make up for their first-half malaise, Adelaide never felt truly out of the fight after the restart and their appeared to be a touch of nerves about Perth as the afternoon lengthened.
But for all of United’s possession, they struggled to properly test Solsky in goal, while substitute Sebastian Despotovski should have finished from close-range, before fellow introductee Sebastian Kukucka fired wide from an acute angle.
Substitute Ellis came within a whisker of scoring his second goal in as many games soon after his introduction, but he made amends by nodding home Kukucka’s inch-perfect cross.
