Big Bash League: Ashton Turner says Perth Scorchers cooking with power in bid for sixth title

Perth Scorchers skipper Ashton Turner says the league’s most successful franchise has a new “recipe” for success this season and believes fans are set to fall in love with it.
The Scorchers are set to take a loading batting unit stacked with international stars into Sunday’s season-opener against Sydney Sixers.
After missing finals last season, the Scorchers will lean on two of the world’s most destructive batsmen.
Australian T20 captain Mitch Marsh will partner big-hitting Kiwi Finn Allen at the top of the order, with young gun Cooper Connolly set to reprise the No.3 role that won him a share in last summer’s player of the tournament.
English import Laurie Evans will also return to the club after spending one year with rivals Melbourne Renegades.
Turner said while Marsh was in the form of his life, the recruitment team had produced a roster full of players capable of ripping the tournament apart for the five-time champions.
“I think we’re going to have a lot of firepower and that’s the way the modern game is going,” he said on Sunday.
“It’s probably a change from the recipe that has been really successful for us in years gone by, and we’re going to have a pretty positive approach to our batting.
“That’s going to be led by Mitch and Finn at the top. (Marsh’s) playing the best cricket he’s played, particularly in white-ball cricket, I don’t think anyone will be surprised if he’s player of the tournament.
“The value he can add at the top of our batting order, there’s not many people that possess the batting power that he does, it’s a pretty tantalising proposition.
“Finn Allen lining up to bat with him as well, so, no doubt, there’s been a reason we’ve assembled the squad that we have.”
Turner added the group the Scorchers have assembled is also versatile enough to manage players coming and going through international duties, such as Josh Inglis and potentially Jhye Richardson, as well as any injuries that occur.
He was also happy to back the side’s ability to go all the way for a sixth time.
“I think we have the personnel to win this competition,” he said.
“There’s been change, but as has always been the case in elite sport, there is going to be change, and other sides are evolving.
“That’s our challenge as well to keep evolving with the times.
“It’s unique having the international side playing at the same time, so we might have guys coming and going for international duties, but we’re really confident in the squad.
“We feel like we have all bases covered and there’s some quality cricketers and also some really exciting cricketers who are, no doubt, going to put on a show for our fans.”
Turner issued a warning for sides braving the Furnace and the franchise’s “cricket-mad” orange fanatics, even hinting they had been starved by cricket after last month’s two-day Test match in Perth.
“I think the fans here have been starved a little bit with a two-day Test match, albeit really entertaining,” he said.
“I think there’s an appetite, as we’ve shown, that this is a cricket-mad state and we’ve felt that for a number of years now.
“There’s no better way to get our campaign underway than in front of our home fans.”
Imports Allen and Evans are expected to arrive in Perth early this week. Players from Western Australia’s Sheffield Shield squad are switch into white-ball mode this week after their clash with Victoria which ended on Sunday.
