Big Bash League: Perth Scorchers quick Brody Couch warns not to underestimate new-look bowling cartel

Scorchers tearaway Brody Couch says Perth’s new-look bowling unit can be the X-factor to return the club to title glory.
Couch was the standout bowler for the Scorchers on his club debut in the side’s Big Bash opener, taking 2-12 from his two overs, including the key scalp of Pakistan superstar Babar Azam.
The ex-Melbourne Stars quick combined with the likes of Mahli Beardman and Joel Paris to lead an attack that represents a significant shift from recent seasons.
Sunday’s match marked the first time in almost eight years that Perth had fielded a line-up without at least one of Jason Behrendorff, AJ Tye or Jhye Richardson.
While Couch admits it is a transitional phase for the Scorchers’ bowling attack, he believes their relative anonymity to the rest of the competition could be an advantage.
“It’s an exciting time because it’s a bit of a transitional phase with our fast bowling stocks. There are big shoes to fill,” he said.
“A lot of the batters in the competition may not have seen as much of our guys before, someone like Mahli or a Bryce Jackson.
“As a batter, when you’re facing someone, when you haven’t seen them before, there’s always an unknown and X-factor about them.

“But I think it’s exciting that everyone brings new strengths. We’ve all played a lot of cricket together for WA, and we all get along really well, which makes it a hell of a lot easier in the field.”
Couch said he had been thrilled to have an immediate impact with the ball, with the wicket of Azam coming in his first over in orange.
“It was a big one, really important wicket, so it was nice to see the back of him early,” he said.
“I think we settled well as a unit and, albeit a decent total to try and chase down, I thought our batters went about it really well. They stuck to their guns and came home with a pretty nice win.
“For any team getting a win straightaway is really important, but us as a unit we’re going to back each other and get the job done no matter what.”
The Scorchers will now travel to Brisbane to face the Heat, who went down in a high-scoring thriller against the Melbourne Renegades, where more than 400 runs were scored.
Couch is wary of their deep batting line-up but says the group will take plenty of confidence into the clash.
“They had a real chance for a lot longer than perhaps others thought. They’re a quality unit with a strong batting line-up, and they’re a very dangerous side,” he said.
“We’ll have our work cut out for us away with a hostile crowd, but we’ll be up for it.”
