Matildas captain Sam Kerr has broken her silence after a nightmare knee injury, which will likely put an end to her Olympic dream.

The 30-year-old ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) while training at Chelsea Football Club’s mid-season camp in Morocco earlier this week.

The all too common sporting injury typically takes nine months to recover from, effectively dashing her hopes of playing in the Paris Olympics, which begin on July 26.

A risky “bracing” procedure looms as Kerr’s only chance of featuring in Paris, should the Matildas qualify, although Football Australia is yet to rule the superstar striker out while she completes her rehabilitation in England with Chelsea.

The injury has ended Kerr’s season in the English Premier League and is a hammer blow to Matilda’s chances at qualifying for the Games with two home and away clashes against Uzbekistan in February to decide their fate.

Kerr has been quiet since news of her injury broke in the early hours of Monday morning but has since shared a brief update on Instagram.

“Don’t know what I would have done without my Millie B last few days,” Kerr captioned a photograph of Chelsea defender Millie Bright.

“Been an absolute nurse queen.”

Bright reposted the story to her own page with the caption, “Anything for my girl. Lotta love.”

She then posted a sweet selfie of Kerr in a huddle with her Chelsea teammates alongside the words: “She’s in good hands”.

The club has also taken to social media, posting a photo of the football star, telling her to keep her head up.

Kerr’s national teammates also took to social media to show their support amid the devastating blow, with Steph Catley declaring she had “no words” while Caitlin Foord was “gutted”.

The Matilda’s will travel to Uzbekistan on February 24 for the first match of the third and final qualifying round ahead of the 2024 Games after coming out on top in the first two matches in November.

They will then be welcomed home by a 50,000-strong crowd of fans at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne on February 28, when their Olympic fate will be determined.
