Phoenix and Firebirds aim for sweet treat over Easter

Prior to the start of the season, South West Phoenix boss Nick Carter was less than amused about having to face the Morley Windmills at Wotton Reserve on Easter Saturday night. However, given their past two games have been postponed and most of the team have been sidelined in isolation because of COVID-19, the away trip is now somewhat of a treat. “I just want to get out on the pitch,” Carter said. “It is going to be interesting as well, because they (Morley Windmills) have just sacked both of their coaches, so I think this will make it an even better game now.” With most of his players available following their stints in isolation, Carter has managed their workload at training to maximise their chances of collecting maximum points on Saturday. “We have had to restructure training — because pretty much our season training plan has now gone out of the window, in terms of what we wanted to do,” he said. In Hyundai women’s State league action, the South West Firebirds came from 2-0 down against UWA Nedlands to record a thrilling 3-2 victory. After Lara Graham initially pulled a goal back for the Firebirds, Stephen Suttie’s side were the benefactors of an incredible 60 seconds midway through the second half, when they scored courtesy of a UWA Nedlands own goal and Savannah Olsthoorn. The Firebirds will host Sorrento at Onside Sports Stadium on Easter Monday.
